WEEK IN REVIEW [15/7/13-19/7/13]

Okay so none of us have been active on this blog for a while... but it doesn't mean we've forgotten about it. To attempt to make up for some of it, I'll be doing a recap of some of the releases this week. There have been so many new MVs this week that's almost been hard to keep up. Haha. No rest for the feels.

EXO- Wolf [Drama Version]

So this isn't a new song but it is a very big (and surprising) release for this week. Since Wolf promotions technically ended last week, fans had practically given up hope that the drama version will ever be released. So what did I do when I saw this video uploaded after I woke up from my nap? I essentially just rolled around in my bed for a good five minutes.
I really don't understand what SM was trying to do with this. The story sort of makes sense in a cliche sort of way (basically a fanfiction come to life) but there was some... completely ridiculous things in this. Lots of people agree on the pointless parkour. It looks cool but it's slowing you down Luhan so just run AROUND the boxes please. Also how the main girl seems to be the only female in their class? Lay is the worst goalie in the history of soccer. You're suppose to run TOWARDS the ball darling, not AWAY from it. Just kidding, I love you anyway Yixing. SM, WHAT IS THIS "TO BE CONTINUED" BUSINESS? You aren't going to make us wait till the end of their follow up promotions to release it right?
Going to stop ranting now. Basically, I'm glad they finally released it. The different songs could have been blended together a bit better but I think were chosen appropriately (though I don't know why this is a Wolf MV when it only plays for half the video). Cinematography was good (but the red vision thing was just... why?).

Poor Kyungsoo

Infinite- Destiny

YESSSS! Infinite is back! I really wanted to see the clips of them in the airplane crash set but I agree it was an appropriate decision to make this B version and remove the clips after the Asiana plane incident. That doesn't stop the MV though from being ridiculously awesome. The city and warehouse sets still look good though I am starting to feel warehouses are being overused now. The boys looked good (minus Sungyeol's useless man corset because I don't get that...).
On the first listen, the song really surprised me. I was a bit worried about Infinite moving away from Sweetune because I loved all the songs they did with them. The song feels stronger than their previous releases and yet they still manage to retain a quality that is uniquely "Infinite" which is always a plus. Destiny is a vocally strong song (I seriously love Sunggyu in this) but I think the highlight for me is definitely Dongwoo's rap. WOW. YES.
Choreography from just watching the MV isn't as distinctive as their previous songs (see Come Back Again to Chaser) but is still appealing and in sync as per usual. It was also nicely filmed and edited together with good distribution of shots to all members.
Overall I am very impressed by this comeback. It took a few listens for me to love it but now I'm definitely addicted to it.

Coz you're my destiny

BTS- We Are Bulletproof Pt 2

This isn't a new song either and just a new video. I hesitated writing about this video because I don't really consider myself a BTS fan (please don't shoot me see what I did there?). However I do like this song better than No More Dream. It's a simple video with only one set that still comes off as visually appealing with good cinematography. The members all look too (sorry I don't know their names so I can't go into specifics).
The only thing that I was really torn over is if I like the lyrics on screen or not. In some cases they add an effect but sometimes it's just distracting. Regardless, I like the lyrics themselves. Choreography also matches the song well. The hat part is very cool. :)
I think it all comes down to personal preference with BTS. I know they already have quite a international fan following and I often feel like I'm one of the few that don't really like them that much. It's not like I'm a hater. I acknowledge that they are talented, it's just that their style of music isn't exactly my cup of tea. However if I listen to this particular song enough, I could like it. To all the people who are starting crap about them copying BAP or "insert group here", for the sanity of everyone please just stop.
TL;DR BTS is going fairly well for a rookie group of 2013 under a small label (though I do believe 2AM is now under this label?). Looking forward to what they bring to the kpop scene in the future. Maybe one day I will like them. Who knows?

Everywhere I go everything I do
I’ll show myself as much as I’ve sharpened the knife
All those people who’ve ignored me now
Oh oh oh oh oh oh hey shout it out

BAP- Hurricane

First thing I need to say, BAP PLEASE TAKE A VACATION! DO I NEED TO KIDNAP YOU AND LOCK YOU A DESERTED ISLAND!? Okay now that it's out of my system we can talk about Hurricane. My honest opinion is that I did not like this song when I first heard it. I don't like this trend of disjointed songs that seems to be making it's way through the kpop scene. SOMEHOW, after listening to it over and over again... I LOVE IT NOW. It defies all reason for me to like this song but for some odd reason that I can not explain... I do! It's probably because of Himchan's loof
Daehyun and Yongjae's vocals are really strong in it though. BYG and Zelo's raps are on point as per usual. Himchan's car with no loof? OH YES. Jongup's purple hair. SUPER YES. I don't know if it's the official choreography or if it's freestyle but the dancing was AWESOME. Sorry for the caps. Cinematography was good. I didn't find anything mindblowing about it but it worked.
In summary, this is really different from Coffee Shop (which I am still recovering from since it was so very not-BAP but I <3 it anyway). I'm really curious as to what the final title track sounds like. Is it going to be like Hurricane, like Coffee Shop or something entirely new that we've never heard before from them yet? I'M SO CURIOUS YEAAAH!

THE LOOF IS ON FIYAHHH

Kim Hyun Joong- Unbreakable (feat. Jay Park)

Our favorite SS501 leader is back! To be honest, the beeeep noise at the beginning of the song really annoyed me when I first started listening to it so I was prepared not to like this song, but once I really got into the song I really liked it. I just need to ignore the beeeep sound now when I listen to it. This is probably my favorite Korean release of his so far in his solo career.
The video has some really cool parts. The dancers/martial artists were awesome. The part where they drew the dragon had me O.O *claps* The actual choreography for the song was quite nice too. BONUS shirtlessness for those who like that sort of thing.
The set looked like just one very large room that they divided into different parts to have different back drops and props. It worked and I think it was shot quite well with good long distance panning shots, close ups, slow motion and sped up sections.
Kim Hyun Joong to me isn't particularly vocally strong but I think he still pulled off the song. Jay Park's feature was pretty good too. Sometimes I question the necessity of features in some songs but I think this one was appropriate.
In conclusion, glad he's back with a strong song. I liked the overall feel of the song. *thumbs up of approval*

KHJ is unbreakable!

Beast- Shadow

BEAST IS FINALLY BACK! They've released some singles since their last come back but it's nice to see them officially releasing their second full album. YES. From the teaser, I already knew this video was going to amazing. The dark feel with the reflections really lifted the aesthetic value of this video. The cinematography was superb. I really enjoyed watching it. It felt like a cross between VIXX's Hyde, Jaejoong's Mine with some Kim Hyun Joong's Unbreakable and Hangeng's Wild Cursive. My friend says the set looks like they let a bunch of elephants onto the Caffeine set. LOL.
Just a few things to point out though... what is with the eagle/bird theme that's invading kpop videos these days? Jaejoong had one, Kim Hyun Joong had one and I think Hangeng did too (though he's not kpop). New trend? Another small complaint is that I didn't feel like I saw all the members. I didn't notice Doojoon until the end half of the MV and I didn't feel like I saw much of Dongwoon. Junhyung, Hyunseung and Yoseob got quite a bit of screen time throughout though. They all looked excellent so why I can't see equal amounts of all of them? Junhyung's eyes rolling back really creeped me out... seriously.
Moving onto choreography, I have a similar thing to say about Shadow as I said before about Destiny. Beast and Infinite for me have really recognizable dances. With Destiny and now with Shadow I didn't get that same effect when watching this MV. I didn't see one move that I wanted to copy straight away and that was distinct enough. Maybe this is just a personal preference but regardless the choreography was excellently executed.
Now for the song, I'm again finding myself to be very conflicted over whether or not I like it. In terms of feel and strength it's not as mellow as Fiction but not as powerful as Shock. It lies sort of between and it doesn't really fit tightly in a particular mood. It's nice and I like it, but I don't love it. I think Beast took a slower approach with this album with the exceptions of maybe the bookend two songs of the album. I found a few of the songs sounded very similar, all with a similar pace to Shadow (though Shadow doesn't have a creepy feel to it which the others don't have).
TL;DR I liked Shadow but it's not my favorite Beast release. Glad they're back promoting together though. :)

THIS SET WAS AMAZING

To end this extremely long post, I just wanted to pick my personal favorite out of this busy and hectic week for my feels. When I combine the song and the video together, my favorite would probably be Infinite's Destiny the most, followed by KHJ's Unbreakable. I liked both the song and videos for both these releases (KHJ loses because of the annoying beeeep sound). I liked the video for Shadow but the song is still growing on me and I liked the song for Hurricane but the video was okay for my tastes. It was really flashy. I'm more the angsty type as you can probably tell and I'm a huge fan of good unique cinematography. EXO's drama version is fun to watch but it came too late for me to go absolutely insane over it and the plot is hmmm... I'm hoping to gets more interesting rather than sticking to cliches. I'm hoping BTS grows on me in the future because I want to like their music but right now it's still not my cup of tea.

Confessions on MAMA Awards 2012

Admin K

All the fuss led up to this. Almost 7 hours (according to the live stream when I started watching) of flashing lights, cheers and disappointment. To be honest, I don't think it deserves as much as people make it to be. It definitely didn't leave me completely emotionally invested like some people. The most predominant controversy being the BAP vs EXO-K drama that spanned the last few weeks of voting. In the end, neither of them won that rookie award; leaving both arguing parties disappointed and the bystanders like me, shaking their heads in shame.
This is just one of the many things I plan to rip apart in my section of this article. Probably why this will start with me and end on a happy note.
Firstly the winners list.

No surprise that PSY won so many of the awards. Gangnam Style rightly deserves Song of the Year for making such a big impact on the global music market. But as I was watching it, I couldn't help but guess the winners to practically all the prizes near the end of the ceremony. Why? Well this is just a theory I had formulated from ideas I read from other people as the ceremony was airing. It seems like MNET tried to make sure everyone who attended left with an award. That would account for some of the awards that I have never heard of before being awarded. It fits together quite nicely once you look at the nominations for the awards that were voted on by fans and then look at the awards that were given that didn't have a fan voting contribution. Just a theory. No bashing. I've just always believed these awards reflected the power of established fandoms and marketing (add in a little bias from the organisers?) rather than true quality of music. Of course, there were many on this extensive list that I think deserved their awards very much.

On to the performances. For making me sit down for so long, the performances had to be good. To be honest, I didn't watch all of them. As I said, seven hours is a long time. EXO and SHINee's performance did give me a slight heart attack from too many feels (maybe a little biased there) but looking at it objectively, the purpose was a "time skip". It looked pretty biased to me. H.O.T, TVXQ, SHINee? It's looking more like an SM promo than nostalgia (though I am not denying that SM has been very popular in the past). Other personal favorites were the obvious epic Epik High and the explosive Big Bang (puns fully intended :P). I also thoroughly enjoyed Roy Kim's performance. I've never heard of him prior to this, but I definitely liked his vocals. Though Seo In Young's English pronunciation didn't cut it for me, K.Will's did. OMG. Just a quick comment on the Troublemaker performance (second MAMA version). Was it just me or did it just get to a new level of sexual that I thought never existed?  Conservative me coming through

Being the stagecraft critic that I am, I have to say that the lighting and sound in this year's ceremony was pretty good. There were times where I picked up sound that was probably from the backstage crew's communication devices but I forgive them. Camera-work was good. Not too jumpy or lagged. Angles were ok. Being a live show though, sometimes the camera did miss some things that I wanted to see through panning to the idol pit (as I called it) or simply shooting from another angle.

Anyway, I think I've ranted enough. I'll leave some for the others. Overall, liked the ceremony but it was very long and sometimes grueling to get through. I won't even go into MNET Global's live Twitter commentary. EUGHHH.... Don't get me started.

Admin S
Ok hi. My turn~

First of all, I sat and watched the entire 7 hours of the stream (screaming at my family occasionally to stop talking to me because I was busy) but I have to admit, I was actually very disappointed in MAMA this year.

Can I just say how annoyingly unprofessional and obnoxious the English MC's were?
They basically didn't know anything or anyone and proceeded to diss the entire of Troublemaker's performance and Epik High's costume.
Then they said something along the lines of:
"Oh. I really liked that one dress that was short at the front and long at the back. I think that was very nice"
"Oh, did you mean Ga In?"
"Was that her? Yeah. I think so. Ga In."

o.m.g.
As MC's of a very important event, you would think to at least commit names to memory and avoid being sarcastic towards the idols.

Moving on from the pretty disappointing and somewhat offensive commentary,
I pretty much tuned in at the very start (although I skipped "The History of MAMA" because gawddddd. that was boring).
The red carpet was quite interesting and I actually enjoyed looking at the fashion and was super delighted by the surprise performances of both B.A.P and Block B (OMG. BLOCKBAP. MY FEELS).

The standouts on the red carpet (for me) were:
B.A.P
Lee Hi
f(x) (omgggg. amber *blubbering mess of incoherent noises*)
Park Shin Hye
Song Joong Ki
Ga In
Block B (so much win omg)
Seo In Young
Wooyoung
Bai Bai He (my favourite of the night)

On to the actual ceremony...
Was anyone else confused about the second award?? (Presented by Simon and PSY's first award of the night)
There was no mention of what the award was or who the nominee's were.
Judging by the look on his face, PSY was pretty darned confused too.
I'm disappointed that MNET did not provide any explanation to this...

The night went on and to be honest, the winners of the awards were quite predictable.
Except Best Female Global Group.
Wtf. How did Kara win that?? They were the least likely of all the nominees (in my opinion).
I still wonder how 2NE1, f(x) and Sistar didn't cinch that one...
[ADMIN K: Evidence to my theory up top]

But the most shocking, disappointing, annoying, unhappy and angry feels I had to an award winner was Busker Busker (not that they're not good and I don't like them. No hate, ok?)
I know that only 20% of the results come from voting but the other 80% is made up of album sales and a judging panel.
Sorry, call me biased but I really, seriously don't think that Busker Busker could've surpassed Exo or B.A.P at album sales...
It seem like MNET just gave it to them to avoid a fanwar between Exotics and Babyz (fried tofuz). I think they just made it worse though? Because both sides came away angry and annoyed and disappointed.
What got me the most though, was that they didn't bother to announce the winner on the live stream but through their Twitter instead...

As for the actual performances, they were actually... quite disappointing and not as good as last year's (in my opinion).

G-Dragon's opening rap was fabulous and amazing and I died so hard because it was perfect.

But then Ailee, Bang Yong Guk and PIA took the stage and honestly... I hated it.

I really really loved Epik High's performance and of course Big Bang's because seriously GD, how did you do that to your hair in less than 2 hours??
And T.O.P, your eyes.

Yeah how did this...

Become this in 2 hours ?

(On a side note, since GD was shirtless under that big, red coat, it's confirmed that his tummy tattoo from Crayon is real)

And then Troublemaker was just... yeah...I'm not even sure what was going on there.

I really didn't like B.O.B and Seo In Young's performance of Airplanes (you would've thought to get someone with a high enough vocal range and who was fluent in English?)

Like Admin K said, there were quite a few awards that didn't really make sense to me (what's a Line Award? and a Guardian Angel Worldwide Performer Award??) and there were a few winners I was quite unhappy with and thought they didn't deserve it and I was quite sad that many bands didn't make the nominations stage (Nu'Est, BtoB, C-Clown etc etc etc etc etc.) but I'd like to congratulate everyone, nonetheless.

Confessions On My K-Pop Life Episode 35

Admin S again~

Admin L and Admin K are a bit busy with exams right now (and oh god mine are next week and I haven't even started studying. haha life of a fangirl)
Anyway.
Something interesting happened today and I thought I'd share it with you all since I have a spare period right now and there's nothing to do *cough*should study*cough*

So today at lunchtime I was sitting with a few friends and another one came over and grabbed my phone which was lying on the table.
He smiles at me and asks "changed your wallpaper again?"

Me: Hey, it's Kris ok. And it was his birthday yesterday~
Him: Hahaha. Whar dew yew wharnt? (in reference to ghetto talk before KCON aegyo)
Me: hehehehheeh Yew guys prahmise nhat to tell anyone?

Ok so here's where I get angry

Other girl: OMFG WHO EVEN CARES IF IT WAS HIS BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY.
Your wallpaper's dumb. It's just some dumb blonde Asian. Just cos he's a popstar ok. God you're so stupid *turns to my guy friend* Who even cares? Do you?
Him: Well... yes, I do. I care it was his birthday yesterday. What about you? Your wallpaper is a stupid flower
Girl: No it's not! *unlocks phone*
Him: ok. it's a stupid photo of you and your stupid boyfriend kissing in front of a stupid fountain

Girl proceeds to get angry
LIKE WHAT EVEN.

First of all, bitch, did you just trash Kris' smiling face? like hell no. It's MY wallpaper, I'll do whatever the hell I want.
Secondly, YOU LISTEN TO KPOP TOO. YOUR RINGTONE IS MA BOY AND YOUR BOYFRIEND IS KOREAN.
YOU HAVE HIS NAME LABELLED AS YEOBO <3 ON YOUR PHONE.
I don't think you have a right to judge me ok.
Thirdly, Kris is Canadian Chinese.
Fourthly, just keep your mouth shut. Do I care if you don't like my wallpaper? It's my wallpaper. It's my phone. I like it. I changed it to be that for a reason so you can just shut up.

You better watch out. Duizhang and his eternal alpaca army will come get you~

Confessions on PYL (Premium Younique Lifestyle)- MAXSTEP

For practically every diehard SMTowner, I think the ultimate wish is for an official SMTown collaboration. Well, THIS is what you’ve all been waiting for! Remember that short clip that Kai, Eunhyuk and Taemin danced to at SBS Gayo Daejun in 2011? Well after about a bajillion years of waiting (trust SM), they FINALLY released the full song.

Even though it’s a promotion song for Hyundai and SM’s collaboration, it still doesn’t stop this song from being completely epic (in my opinion at least). It features Eunhyuk of Super Junior, Henry of Super Junior M, Hyoyeon of SNSD, Kai of EXO-K, Luhan of EXO-M and Taemin of SHINee. The group itself is 5 guys, 1 girl and 6 members in total. Does that sound familiar to anyone?
THE SM AVENGERS!!!

OH YES! ;)

Ok, to the actual song. If you’re like me and you don’t mind dubstep THAT much (I don’t like all dubstep ok), then this song should be your song; if you can get past the over processing. Seriously. Hyoyeon practically sounds the same as everyone else because of how much they processed her voice. :/

Since it’s from SM you can’t escape the SM flair. Maxstep is like a cocktail mashup of TVXQ’s Keep Your Head Down and Catch Me meets SNSD’s The Boys and EXO’s MAMA.

Also another characteristic of SM songs… the ENGLISH! WHAT THE CRAP IS MAXSTEP SUPPOSED TO MEAN!? I don’t know how this is supposed to advertise a car but for some reason it reminds me of Max Changmin…. >.> Apart from the nonsensical title, pronunciation doesn’t work in their favour, which the processing doesn't complement either. For starters, the first time they say Maxstep in the beginning of the song, I thought they were saying “let’s dance”. That’s how bad it is sometimes. The rest of the times they say it; it ends up sounding like “dubstep” or “next step” or practically any other word or phrase that ends in “step”.

Admittedly most of them aren’t known for having the strongest vocals in their respective groups, but rather I think the main selling point of this song is the performance and the dance, which is fine for a group comprised of the dancers of the groups.

The teasers for the supposed MV for Maxstep.
Part 1

Part 2

OH MY!!
My only comment is that who doesn’t want to see sexy guys and a sexy girl draped over sexy cars? ;)

Can we get more SMTown collab songs SM? PWEASEE!!??

UPDATE:

The Full MV has been released! :D
